Graham asked me to send you some information for the NZAIMS newsletter about our Mentoring Pilot and support for overseas teachers.
Mentoring Pilot
The Teaching Council has launched a new induction and mentoring pilot – Tuakana Teina – which aims to match experienced pou tautoko/mentor teachers with Provisionally Certified Teachers/Beginning Teachers. If you (or someone you know) is looking for a mentor, or interested in becoming a mentor, then they'd like to hear from you!
Overseas teachers can certainly join the pilot if they meet the criteria.
To qualify for Tuakana Teina teachers need to:
Support for Overseas Teachers
The Teaching Council is working with the Ministry of Education to design supports for overseas-educated teachers which includes an introduction to expectations and context of being a teacher in New Zealand. Importantly, this includes the culturally responsive practices needed to work in New Zealand.
Two high-level orientation videos are being developed for overseas teachers as part of the current campaign to recruit school teachers from offshore. The first video describes what it means to be a teacher in Aotearoa New Zealand and the second is about what teaching looks like here. These videos are intended to give new teachers things to think about and prepare to discuss with their colleagues when they start at their new school. We will also work with the Ministry on how we can strengthen the modules already available for all beginning teachers during their formal induction and mentoring programme.
The contact for the Mentoring Pilot here at the Council is Charmaine Nelson [email protected].
