Guidance for those responsible for managing Vaping on school sites.
Vaping and schools
As you probably know, more young people are trying vaping. You may even have had to manage this in your own school.
Under the Smoke-free Environments Act schools, kura kaupapa, early childhood education centres, and kōhanga reo must be smokefree - indoors and out, 24/7. However, this Act only applies to smoking, and not to vaping. The Government is working to put legislation in place to ensure vaping products are accessible to those who need them to stop smoking while protecting children and young people. A Bill to amend the Smoke-free Environments Act is expected to come before Parliament soon.
The Health Promotion Agency/Te Hiringa Hauora (HPA) has provided information for school leaders on what they can do now, in the absence of the new legislation. While the information is geared more towards secondary schools, I’m sure that intermediate school leaders will also find it useful. Please pass this message on to the NZAIMS members through your usual communication methods.
We offer suggestions about where to go to for easy to read information and the most up-to-date, relevant research about vaping and smoking in New Zealand. This information includes what the law says, and suggestions, on how school leaders can develop their own knowledge, and support their staff and students’ parents understanding. There are also ideas on how they can support secondary students understanding of vaping, and develop their critical thinking around substance use in general.

When the new legislation is passed, I will update the webpage accordingly and let you know of the changes as they relate to schools.
